THEFTS BY BOYS’ “GANG”
LOOT FOUND UNDER HALL FLOOR (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS. May 20. Stolen goods valued at more than £2OO, and including a quantity of jewellery, were recovered yesterday by detectives from beneath the floor of a scout hall in Hastings. Detectives have questioned members of a gang comprising at least five boys aged from nine to 14. None of the boys belongs to the Scout Movement. Police believe the goods are the loot from a series of breaking and entering offences and shop-lifting by members of the gang over recent weeks. Among the goods recovered was a diary which disclosed the membership. ages, and various “duties” of members of the gang. On the first page was a diagram of “the key to the hut” signed by one of the members. One name given in the book was that of a 14-year-old boy who described himself as captain and doorkeeper. Another, 13 years old. was “second in command (sergeant),” and two others, aged 10 and 13 years, described themselves as “spies.” Among the goods recovered are two diamond rings valued at more than £5O each. Entry to the confined space where the stolen goods were hidden was obtained through a small trapdoor set in the side of the building.
