DOG THIEF IN SUBURBS
MAN POSES AS CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEE An imposter is collecting stray dogs in Christchurch. The imposter says he is a dog-catcher employed by the City Council, but the council denies knowledge of him and says that the man is collecting stray dogs—collared and uncollared —without its authority.
Police have been given the following description of the man: about 30 years old. small build, dark hair, swarthy complexion. As he took into his charge a dog at Waltham Park on Saturday morning the man was questioned by a householder, Mrs R. J. Blackburn, of 214 Wilsons road. The man said he impounded the dogs behind the council buildings. The council pound is in Moorhouse avenue.
The man also told Mrs Blackburn that owners would have to pay £2 to the council to recover the dogs. He said he thought that the payment was “a bit of a racket,” and added that he had picked up four dogs in Spreydon the day before. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also denied employing the man. “Our men collect dogs only by special request.’ said the society’s animal home manager (Mr L. R. Glanville).
