FAULTY SHIPS’ LIFEBOATS
“Blitz” By Australian Marine Department (Rec. 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE. May 8 Australian marine authorities will continue their “blitz” on faulty lifeboats on overseas ships “until the danger is eradicated.” Captain D S. Bull. Director of Navigation, said in Melbourne today: “We will continue our investigations, and, if necessary, prosecutions, until we find the international code of safety of life at sea is being obeyed.” The marine branch tightened its inspections some time ago when it was found the international code was being disobeyed. About half a dozen ships have been found with defective equipment since the beginning of this year. “Previously we gave warnings.” he said. “We found our warnings were being ignored. So we had to take stronger measures—by prosecuting the captains.” In a Melbourne District Court, the master of the Italian liner Toscana. Captain Guiseppe Bonivento, was fined £lOO on a charge of failing to keep the lifesaving gear in his ship ready for use. He was the second master to be fined in Melbourne recently. The Court was told that two of the Toscana’s 16 lifeboats were rotted Galvanised water containers were holed and corroded.
