REBEL RAIDS IN ALGERIA
Slaughter Of 20 Europeans
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) ALGIERS, May 8. Reinforcements are today being rushed to the areas in Algeria between Oran and the border of Morocco, where 20 European farmers have been slaughtered by Moslem rebels.
The authorities fear fresh attacks in the last part of the Ramadan fast, which is due to end on Friday or Saturday when the new moon is sighted. The rebels crept up on 40 farms in the area west of Oran, setting fire to the houses and killing the farmers caught there.
Reports reaching Algiers last night said that 233 rebels were killed and 105 captured in 48 hours, for the loss of 22 French soldiers killed and 18 taken prisoner.
In neighbouring, newly-independent Morocco, the French High Commissioner. Mr Dubois, warned the Moroccan Government that he might be forced to order French troops still stationed there into action if 13 Senegalese infantrymen kidnapped by rebels on Sunday were not returned
