TOWN MILK SUPPLIES
Sir. Mr H. W. Thompson, president of the Milk Consumers’ Protection Association, seems to know a lot about . Perhaps he could answer the following questions:—<l) How many o lr *A arms has he visited this season? <2) Area and time of season visit carried out? «3) What does it cost to produce milk at the farm? <4> Does he consider £lO 10s and keep being I well paid for working 70-80 hours a week and no extra money for being wet through several times a day? <5) How do these wages and conditions compare with his own? (6) Would AJr Thompson be prepared to work a full season on a dairy farm under the above conditions? «7) Would he en-
courage other producers to enter town supply when the production of the one already on it is never fully paid for? <8) Is it true that Mr Thompson is an advocate of reconstituted milk? —Yours, etc., INTERESTED. April 17, 1956. [‘‘Nine-tenths of the correspondent's queries were irrelevant to the main issue,” said Mr Thompson when this letter was referred to him yesterday. That main issue is the improvement in quality of the Christchurch town milk, and whether improvement can be attained under the present tigh* monopoly enforced by law. ‘‘Neither I nor the Milk Consumers’ Protection Association have ever advocated reconstituted milk. What we want is good quality fresh milk.’*]
