POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS

TEN TO BE BUILT THIS YEAR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 8. By the end of the year 10 more fullsized post-primary schools should i nave been built, the Minister of Education iMr R. M. Algie) told delegates • to the annual conference of the Posli primary Teachers’ Association today. Bv the end of next year there should be "at least another 10, and perhaps 12. he said. By 1965. there should be twice as many post-primary schools as in 1949. Mr Algie said this would mean better chances for secondary school teachers. There was a danger that efforts to boost . teacher recruitment would tend to lower standards, but teachers could help to keep the standards high. Mr Algie said more teachers might mean breakaway organisations. From a politician’s point of view that would mean the possibility of playing one group off against the other, but then, said, he was not a politician when it came to education. He urged the association to remain strong and united.
