Sir Trust And Spanker Win Divisions Of Stakes

TROTTING

The successes of Sir Trust and Spanker in their respective divisions of the Great Northern Trotting Stakes at Epsom on Saturday did little to determine two-year-old supremacy in the Auckland district for the season. Both horses won easily, particularly Sir Trust, which had the result of his division in safe keeping a long way from the post. Sir Trust was confidently driven bj M. Holmes, who held him handily placed behind the pacemaker, Scoitisi Command, until near the straight. When asked lor an effort, Sir Trus won easily from Scottish Command with Dune making up ground for thirc ahead of Red Logan, Gaillard Direct and Hanover Star.

Sir Trust is a bay gelding by Sii Michael, winner of the New Zealand Derby Stakes and other good races, from Gold Trust, by Roy de Oro from Trustworthy, by Worthy Bond. Gold Trust is also the dam of Timothy, Captai ib Sam, and Hilda’s Trust. Trustworthy left winners in True Trust, Diamond Trust, and Sabre.

Sir Trust was bred by Mr H. Brady, of East Tamaki, and he is trained at lakanini by K. F. Morrison for Mr L. F. Ramsay. He is a good type of youngster, and may develop fine classic form next season. Scottish Command, which is trained by J. S. Hunter at Trentham for Mr R. A. McKenzie, is a colt by U. Scott from Mary Wootton, by Springfield Globe from Pariesienne, the dam of Golden Hero, La Mignon. Scotch Parce and others. At his previous starts he had finished fourth in the Manawatu Futurity Stakes and the Hawera Juvenile Stakes. He appears to be improving with racing, and should yet live up to his breeding.

Favourite Fails Dune, winner of the South Auckland Futurity Stakes at his previous start, was "favourite for the race, but he did not look like justifying this support. Trained at Pukekohe by J. K. Hughes for Mr W. Hosking, he is • voiding by Sandydale from Lady Slipper, dam also of Pirouette, winner of the race in 1946. He was bought for 350gns at the 1955 yearling sales.

Red Michele made most of the pace in the second division, with Spanker handily placed on the rails. Panui took the measure of Red Michele early in the run home, but he was unable to hold off Spanker and Goodfellow, one of the outsiders of the field. Red Michele was a fair fourth, with Monterey and Sevander at the head of the others.

Spanker, a member of H. M. Allen’s Pukekohe team, is raced by his breeder. Mr H. O. Kay, of Te Awamutu. He is a colt by the United States stallion. Gay Reveler, from a smart race mare in Level Best, which took a tight assessment in the Auckland province three or four years ago. J-evel Best, which took a mile and a quarter record of 2min 39 2-ssec, was got by Josedale Grattan from Revision. the dam also of Wayward Peter, by Jack Potts from Olive Turmoil. by a Logan Pointer colt. Spanker had not shown much stamina in his earlier races this season, but he has apparently improved considerably, as he ran on strongly at the finish of his race.

Goodfellow, the 15, 17 favourite, nearly caused a major upset. He was having only his second race start, and finished well for his placing without really troubling the winner over the last 50 yards.

Ferguson, at Te Awamutu, he is a gelding by the Australian-bred Master Lawn from a useful race mare in Ivy Goodwin, by Peter Bingen from Ivy Ax worthy, by Travis Ax worthy. Ivv Axworthy 15 also the dam o? State Control and Ivy Bingen. Panui. winner of the Hawera Juvenile Stakes earlier in the season, is

a member of F. Smith’s Frankton team. Raced by his breeder, Mr J. H. W. Telfer, of Otorohanga, he is a gelding by Loyal Globe (by Springfield Globe) from Elsie Bingen, by Peter Bingen from Sister Bell, b?Gold Nell. Elsie Bingen left another winner in Abigail.

Dcrive’s Failure Derive, having his first start since being bought at a high price, was made a warm favourite for the Mangore Handicap at Epsom on Saturday. He ran very wide all the way. and could make no impression on the leaders over the last half-mile. The Dillon Hall pacer has plenty of speed and stamina, and he may not be long making amends.

Glassindo Qualifies In a trial at Victoria Park. Greymouth. Glassindo was the only horse to qualify to start at totalisator meetings. Driven by her trainer. R. G. Morris, Glassindo recorded 3min 27sec for the mile and a half. Raced by Dr. B. W- Nixon, of Greymouth, she is a four-year-old mare by Dillon Hall from Huia Potts, the dam also of Aloysius, Sandbird. Triple Play. Dealer’s Choice, Arriba, and Tassel Trick.

Disappointing Effort Excelsa was expected to race well in the Telegraph Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, but the speedy Young Bob mare was not a possibility. She lost ground at the start, and did not improve her position. Excelsa is engaged in the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double on the second day of the meeting, and it will not surprise if she takes part in the finish. Her race last week was her first since March, and the run should have improved her. Driver Warned

New South Wales Trotting Club stewards last Friday evening warned the well-known trainer. W. Picken. that he was in danger of losing his driving licence. Picken was warned - after an inquiry into the performance of Channel Rip in the Two-year-old Stakes. Channel Rip, a 16 to 1 outsider, broke half a mile from the finish, and interferred with several horses. Picken told the stewards that Channel Rip was a lazy horse, and had left his gear when hit with the whip. The stewards told Picken that they had taken into consideration the fact that the horse was a two-year-old. and no action would be taken. However. they said Pirken’s exhibition of driving on this and previous occasions “left a lot to be desired.” He was warned that a similar exhibition of driving would bring about the cancellation of his driving licence. Promising Trotter Rapuwai confirmed his good form at Nelson in February when he gained a convincing win in the Tanhuna Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday. He met trouble from a breaking horse early in the race, but when he worked clear in the run home, he was trotting with plenty in reserve. He won easily. He trotted the mile and five furlongs in 3min 38sec—an outstanding effort for a comparatively inexperienced four-year-old.

Croughton, from Quite Sound, by Quite Sure from Resound, by Wrack from Echo, bv El Carbine. This family has produced a host of high-class winners at the trottjng gait, including Fairy Wings. Super Sound. Elate, Lament. Discord. Ripcord. Concord. Kolmar. and Bishop s Cleeve. Rapuwai Is certain to add further honours to the family record, and n°xt season he should graduate to the best classes.
