FLIGHTS BY DUKE

‘Narrow Squeak’ Reported

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 8. Rumours that the Duke of Edinburgh had “a very narrow squeak” in his private de Havilland Heron plane on a recent flight to Germany have been confirmed, according to* the “Daily Sketch.”

The newspaper said the station manager at Stuttgart airport had revealed that when the Duke flew to Germany to attend his eldest sister’s silver wedding anniversary 19 days ago, his instruments failed.

The station manager said special bearings had to be given to get the Duke down safely. “The story has given rise to reports that the Queen is worried by the Duke's continued flying,” the paper added. “She would be happier, the reports infer, if he stopped piloting aircraft.”
