ONE MAN DEAD, TWO INJURED

CAR LEAVES ROAD NEAR KAIKOURA

One man was fatally injured and two others were admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with head injuries. after the car in which they were travelling left the coast road and ran down a steep bank on to the beach seven miles south of Kaikoura, near the Punch Bowl, about 11.30 p.m. on Sunday, The man who died was: Mr Magnus Stewart Scott, aged 36. of Cheviot, a married man with three children. Mr Scott, a grocer, was a passenger.

Those injured were: Mr Edwin William Sandford, aged 21, single, of Cheviot, the driver, who suffered head injuries, and Mr Bernard William Martin, aged 35 a farmer, of Domett, who suffered head injuries. Mr Martin, who is married, with three children, is the owner of the car. They had been travelling south.

The car. which rolled on to its side, was first noticed by Mr W. B. Clarkson. jun.. of the Stag and Spey. Kaikoura. who was driving north. He returned to report the accident to the caretaker at Goose Bay. and then drove on to Kaikoura to advise the police. The St. John Ambulance from Kaikoura took the injured to the Kaikoura Hospital, where Mr Scott died on admission. Yesterday afternoon Messrs Sandford and Martin were transferred by ambulance to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Their condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory. An inquest into the death of Scott was opened at Kaikoura, anti adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. CAR DRIVER FATALLY INJURED (New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI. Mav 7. When returning last evening from a day’s shooting. Richard Atkinson, aged 18. son of a former Bay of Islands county chairman, was fatally injured. The car he was driving crashed intn a parked car at Titirangi, Pakaraka. Mr Atkinson died this morning in the Kawakawa Public Hospital.
