NORTH CANTERBURY AMALGAMATION
OPPOSITION FROM THREE COUNTY COUNCILS Suggestions that the Cheviot, Amuri, and Waipara County Councils be amalgamated or, alternatively, split into two counties, were strpngly opposed at a meeting of representatives of the three counties in Cheviot. The meeting was called at the request of the Local Government Commission after some ratepayers whose properties lie partly in the Amuri county and partly in Chevioty county. | proposed amalgamation. This was
opposed by the Cheviot council, and the po.ition was forwarded to the commission. Various speakers at the meeting suggested amalgamation in different forms, one being a division into two major counties, one consisting of the Cheviot county, and the seaward portion of Waipara county, and the second the remainder of Waipara and all o! Amuri county. A resolution was passed opposing amalgamation in any form., ahd the meeting recommended that each council reply to the Local Government Commission to that effect.
