Members of the New Zealand Junior Red Cross have recently provided eating utensils and three metal bowls each for 400 boys on Dong Bok Boys’ Home in Seoul. Korea. These boys were formerly bootblacks and beggar boys gathered off the streets and were eating out of old tin cans with their hands. Their food was brought to them in old oil tins which had long since rusted. There was a special ceremony when Miss Helen McArthur, the League of Red Cross Societies Coordinator in Korea at the time, presented the boys with their gifts. The boys were delighted and laughed when one of them, in his “thank you” speech said “Now our soup and rice will not fall through the holes in our dishes, but will all get into our stomachs.” More recently Junior Red Cross members have provided money to pay for digging a well and installing a pump at “Hope Boys Town.” Previously all their water had to be carried about half a mile from a small stream. When the water got low. it froze solid in the winter, and left the home without water.
