TUNNEL ROAD
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE PROPOSAL
CRITICISM BY MR W. S. MACGIBBON
“It is Christchurch; someone always raises an alternative,” said Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon last evening of proposals that there should be an investigation of alternative routes for the Lyttelton road tunnel.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association, Mr Mac Gibbon said: “We have got to see that we do not get cross-sections upsetting the work of years. The Tunnel Road Promotion Committee has worked closely with the Ministry of Works and we know it has decided on a certain route, yet today we have advocates for another. I know the authorities in Wellington do not favour the alternative route.”
Mr Mac Gibbon said that Christchurch never seemed to get a minority to “bury their heads and work with the majority, as they do in Auckland. There, instead of trying to upset things, they get together once a scheme has been agreed on,” he said.
