DISAPPEARANCE FROM HINEMOA
WOMAN FOUND TO HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE
An inquest was held at Lyttelton yesterday into the death of Winifred Mary Bartlett, a widow, of Tiroa, who disappeared from the steamer-express Hinemoa on the night of February 8 A verdict that Mrs Bartlett committed suicide, presumably by drowning, was returned by the District Coroner (Mr E. B. E. Taylor).
Evidence was given by Mrs Mary Deighton. a stewardess in the Hinemoa. that Mrs Bartlett was the sole occupant of a two-berth cabin. On the arrival of the ship at Lyttelton, the witness found that neither berth had been occupied. John Alistair McEwan, purser of the Hinemoa, said that he examined the luggage in the cabin, and found a letter addressed to the master of the ship. Captain T. H. J. Davis. He reported the matter to the police.
