SHORTAGE OF RAILWAY STAFF
Sir, —We hear a lot about the terrible staff problem on our railways, but I know of one glaring case of overstaffing. This is on a Canterbury branch line not far from Christchurch. At this particular station the stationmaster does a great job of work; but the porter is unnecessary. There is no work for him to do except rolling tarpaulins—Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. May 6, 1956.
