BRITISH LABOUR AND THE RUSSIANS
Sir. —I commended the humanity of the Labour Party in protesting to Bulganin and Khrushchev against the imprisonment of social democrats in Iron Curtain countries. “Progress” does not seem to understand that the Labour men were concerned for the welfare of social democrats as persons, as well as representatives of a political party. He is more concerned with defending the ideology involved. The world is too sadly familiar with the brutal actions of those countries who speak fluently of “coexistence.” “non-interference” and similar catch phrases, at the same time denying elementary political freedom to their subjects. No matter how theoretically high-minded a system might be. if the subjects of that system are denied natural political rights, then that system is evil. “Progress” will not fully understand until he realises that persons. who fulfil their nature most in conditions of the greatest freedom, are more important that ideologies.— Yours, etc.. JEFFERSON DEMOCRAT. May 7, 1956.
