THE ART SOCIETY’S EXHIBITION
Sir,—After I had visited the recent Art Society’s exhibition my thoughts were artistically muddled. Perhaps I should say that I feel that the selectors’ artistic eyes must have been muddled to have allowed some of the pictures to be hung when I am certain that far better pictures were rejected. We have in our midst artists of repute, with overseas training. Their work should be shown, even though not the “type” which the selectors admire, so that young artists can see what training and maturity can accomplish. An afterthought: beauty is beauty whether in figure, face, or form. So why paint ugliness? What we see influences character and outlook.—Yours, etc CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. May 7. 1956.
