Stablemates Win Both Main Ashburton Races

RACING

The Riccarton stable of J. E. Shaw houses the winners of the two main races on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday.

Border Reiver, winner of an eventful steeplechase, is owned by Mrs Shaw, who received him as a gift irom Mr T. S. Harrison not long after he was purchased at the dispersal sale of the late Mr Andrew Grant s horses. This was Border Reivers second win for Mrs Shaw. Tess won the Ashburton County Handicap soundlv in the colours of Mr G. R. Macdonald. She beat a strong field of milers, the Wincatui-trained Silver King being her strongest opponent. Tess challenged boldly from a handy position and won away by half a length from Silver King, which did most of the pacemaking. This was Tess’s first win since the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton in September, but her immediate form background was good, and she was well supported. Tess carried tickets worth £2831 in h double pool, of £24.053. and 733 5s tickets <657 off-course) were redeemed on Winning Wave, winner of the second leg. the Rakaia Hack Handicap. The Tess—Wnning Wave combination paid £lOB 9s 6d for £l.

On-course double investments amounted to £3458 10s. Ashburton again filled the doubtful distinction of providing the unusual in a steeplechase. The first two fences in the Alford Hack and Hunters’ Steeples put six of the 10 runners out of the race. St. Trum and Chief Stuart, which both ran off at the second fence, were taken back to complete the course, but over the last mile Waikana. Border Reiver and Sentinel, had the race to themselves.

Border Reiver outstayed Waikana. winning with a good deal in hand. A splendid track helped fast times to be recorded. Export made a track record-breaking run when he won the Long beach Hack Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, in 3min 8 l-ssec. Tess won the mile Ashburton County Handicap in Imin 38sec. *^ e _ on-course totalisator turnover was £31.607 10s, an increase of £8720 on last year.

Strong Challenge Tess challenged strongly from a handy position for a decisive win in the Ashburton County Handicap, the first leg of the double. She cut down Silver King close to home, beating the Wingatui hors? which was favourite, by half a length. Leprechaun made an encouraging .start back P€n company ’ finish ing third, a neck

..Silver King sped on the front inside the first two furlongs. Macduff went with him. and Leprechaun followed them to the half-mile. Desperado. Tess, and Rio Negro were close at hand, ahead of Paulette, Bosky, Golden Morn, Patris, and Strato.

Silver King led Macduff by three-quar-ters of a length on the home turn, where Leprechaun was a clear third from Desperado and Tess.

Macduff reac ed the end of his run near the furlong, where Silver King looked likely to hold on. But Tess’s run was bold, and the favourite could not coze with it.

leprechaun battled gamelv right to the end for his third. He was a length clear of the consistent Desperado. Paulette was fifth, but three lengths behind. Strato improved a few places for sixth. Next were Rio Negro. Goldwyn. Bosky. Golden Morn, Tom Bowling. Naval Treaty, Royal Warrant, Patris. Macduff, and Jamell.

Eventful Steeples Seven of the 10 starters made mistakes in the Alford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, won soundly by the Riccarton-p-ained Border Reiver. The Southland Jumper Waikana had a big lead going Into the last mile, but Border Reiver steadily closed the gap and could have run clear early in the run home. Instead he was allowed to coast in with a comfortable lead of three-quarters of s length.

Excheouer ducked off on the inside of the first fence, but the second fence took a heavier toll. St. Truin. Chief Stuart. Grey valley. Waffles, and King Willow ran off, and in doing so the latter hit the wing and dropped R. W. Gould. Four were left—Waikana. Border Reiver Sentmel and Brown Baron. Waikana then had a good lead, and started on the last round 12 lengths clear of Border Reiver and Sentinel. Brown Baron was not jumping with any confidence, and there were few surprised when he made a bad leap and dropped his rider a mile from home. Waikana was then clear by la lengths, but Border Reiver steadily reduced his lead going to the half-mile. fence" 35 alongside E° in S to the last

Border Reiver reached the lead without JpHf? trou b le - gamely though Waikana battled on under a hard ride. Sentinel followed them in. 12 lengths back. St. Truin and Chief Stuart were both tried again, to complete the course. Exchequer and Waffles were tried again, toe. but they did not get far. The others were not persevered with.

- . Second Leg Winning Wave caused a mild surprise bj winning the Rakaia Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double, for his Wiggatui owner-trainer, Mr A. Winders. He challenged from a trailing position, drawing clear in the last furlong to win y a length and a half from the second favourite.
