Australian Fast Bowlers Attacked

(Rec. 7 p.m.)- LEICESTER. May 5. Leicestershire had 275 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets when play ended on the first day of the Australians’ three-day match at Leicester today. The most successful Australian bowlers were Wilson with three wickets for 59, and Archer with four for 62.

Wilson, in his first match in England. flighted the ball and varied his pace impressively. Archer bowled particularly well and was unlucky to have three definite chances dropped in slips.

The variety of play had the crowd excited and applauding frequently, especially during the attacks the Leicestershire batsmen Palmer, Van Geloven and Smithson made on Australia's pace bowling. Johnson lost, the toss for the third time and Leicester went in to bat in a gusty wind. The opening pair. Lester and Hallam, seemed to be settling in when Hallam was caught by Burge off Archer for 14. He played forward to an out winger and gave Burke an easy catch. Van Geloven was the batsman after the batting order £ad been changed when the star Leicestershire batsman. M. Tompkin. withdrew from the side with an injury.

Twice, within a few overs. Crawford, fielding at second slip, missed Van Geloven off Archer. Johnson moved Crawford to mid-on and Miller into first slip. Rutherford to second Lester went out to a fast ball from Archer whi-h rot his off stump at 38. and Leicestershire were two down for 95. Rutherford missed Van Geloven at 41 off Archer, but caught him at leg slin soon afterwards nff Wilson. Palmer attacked Crawford and quickly moved to 22. He was 34 when Archer got his middle Stump with a beautifully pitched ball. Jackson was out leg before to Ar-her for 35 Then Wilson claimed his second wicket when Miller caught Munden st square leg. and his third when Burge took a high catch on the run to put Smithson out. WORCESTERSHIRE PLAYS TO DRAW

Worcestershire yesterday battled to a draw with Australia in a same in which the 24-year-old county cricket club joint secretary Peter Richardson, a left-hander, was the hero with 130 not out at stumps. Richardson, in a five hours and a half innings, soundly handled the CrawfordLindwall pace attack and when the new ball came he weathered Lindwall to reach his century in 270 minutes. Worcestershire, 90 in its first innings, made 231 for nine in reply to Australia's 438. Seven minutes from stumps it seemed that Worcestershire would be cheated of a draw after a long struggle. Johnson had Berry lbw and then took the incoming Chesterton with the fourth last ball of the match. The last batsman. Flavell. joined Richardson and faced Johnson’s last three balls which he successfully blocked. Lindwall took two wickets for 52. Crawford took two for 57.
