N.Z. ANTARCTIC APPEAL
HEATHCOTE COUNTY TO OPEN LIST
In response to a letter received by the Heathcote County Council from the Christchurch Antarctic Appeal Committee asking the council to associate itself with the committee’s appeal for funds to equip the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition, facilities will be made available for individuals to make donations, and a subscription list will be opened. This was decided by the council on the suggestion of Cr. R. A. Young as an alternative to allocating local body money to the fund.
“The trouble is that most people are completely in the dark about the financing of this expedition,” said Cr. Young. “I cannot see how local bodies can be asked to subscribe towards this appeal. We cannot very well use ratepayers’ money on anything but local body expenses.”
