WINTER GAMES LAPSE

LA WN TENNIS

FEW ENTRIES FOR COMPETITION

The proposed winter competition which was to have been conducted by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis with two men’s grades and one women’s grade, has lapsed because of lack of entries. It was reported to the association’s competitions committee last evening that only two entries had been received for the men’s first grade—North Linwood and Elmwood—four for the men’s second grade, and two for the women’s grade— Elmwood and South Christchurch. The committee decided that the competition could not be held with so few entries.

The last time the winter competition was held was in 1954. It also lapsed last year because of lack of entries.

The committee will recommend to the next quarterly meeting of delegates to the association that next summer the number if teams in both the senior men’s and senior women’s competitions oe limited to eight with not more than one entry from each club.

The men’s competition was limited temporarily in such a way for the season just concluded and a new competition system adopted. The committee was very satisfied with the way the competition ran so the new scheme would possibly be introduced to the women’s competition also if it comprised eight teams. This season there were six.
