RAILWAYMEN’S CONDITIONS

UNIONS’ TALKS WITH MINISTER

CABINET REPORT TO BE STUDIED

(New Zeaiana Press Association) . WELLINGTON, March 26. Copies of a report and recommendations drawn up by a Cabinet subcommittee which has been studying railwaymen’s conditions were handed to representatives of the four railwaymen’s organisations when they met the Minister of Railways (.Mr J. K. McAlpine) today.

The report, which Mr McAlpine said afterwards was confidential at this stage, will be discussed by the various organisations, after which they will again meet the Minister. It is thought likely that this meeting will take place next week.

With Mr McAlpine when he met the organisations were the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) and the Attorney-General (Mr J. R. Marshall), the chairman of the Railways Commission (Mr W. E. Hodges), and the General Manager of Railways (Mr A T. Gandell).

The principal announced causes of dissatisfaction among the organisations are conditions and the long hours worked under existing rates of pay.
