THEATRE BURNT DOWN

FIRE IN BUSINESS AREA OF GRANITY (From Our /- *’rn Reporter) WESTPORT. March 21. The Lyric Theatre, in the business area of Granity, one of the largest theatres in Buller, was destroyed by fire this afternoon. The theatre was ir the middle of a line of business premises but slightlv to the rear, and the Granity Volunteer Fire Brigade worked well to confine the fire to the immediate area. A shop, operated by the Granity Band Committee, in conjunction with the theatre, was also destroyed, and Ihe rear of Mr J. Johnston’s confectionery and grocery shop was damaged. The Granity Hotel, owned by Mr K. Barr, on the south side of the theatre, was scorched.

The fire was first noticed at 2.10 p.m and the assistance nf the Westport brigade was sought 15 minutes later.
