WAIRAKEI ROAD SEWER

RENEWED REQUEST TO STATE FOR AID Assistance by the Housing Division in financing sewer works in the Wairakei road area is still being sought by the Christchurch Drainage Board. The Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) recently advised that he had fully investigated' the board’s suggestion that his department might temporarily provide the funds for the extension of a trunk sewer to the Wairakei road area to provide an outlet for the Government’s housing blocks, but regretted that the Government could not agree to the suggestion. The board reported that it envisaged the diversion of money which would be expended on temporary sanitary facilities to the provision of a permanent sewer. It said that the cost of temporary facilities would average not less than £lOO a unit, and that 3000 units were proposed. None of this money would be recoverable, but if it was used for the provision of a trunk sewer to give an outfall for the sewers in the blocks, it would ultimately be refunded by the board when it was able to raise the necessary loans. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Minister of Finance (Mr J. T. Watts).
