ADDINGTON MARKET

General Increase In Values ALL CLASSES AFFECTED A marked increase in prices all round was the main feature of the store sheep sale at Addington yesterday, and the improved tone of the market was in marked contrast to last week’s sale. Rates for all classes of sheep were above last week, and, for lambs, could be regarded as about 10s a head better. Values were up in every section of the sale, and this was only to be expected, as a result of the heavy rain earlier in the week. Now, with the prospects for winter feed so much brighter, buyers are operating with greater freedom. The yarding, particularly for younger sheep and lambs, was considerably below last week’s total, and this was probably due, in some measure, to the fact that farmers now anticipate fattening some of the lambs that they would have had to quit if the drought had continued. The total of lambs this week was only 3027 compared with 7636 a week ago. 'Twotooths were also in much smaller numbers than last week, with a total of 2958 (mostly ewes), compared with 5715 at last Wednesday’s sale. A small proportion of the two-tooth offering was wethers, and these met a fair demand. The offering of adult sheep was 10,054, and this was mainly comprised of ewes, but included some wethers. Altogether, the yarding totalled 16.039, which was a good deal below last week’s figure of 27,288. There was a fair attendance of buyers and the bidding was more spirited than' has been the case in recent weeks. Quite a number of Chatham Islands Romnevs were included in the offering, and these as usual, met a good demand. Top price for the day was 91s 6d for a pen of 60 Romney two-tooths sold on behalf of a Southland client, and the same vendor also sold another 146 similar sheep at 91s. The top price was an advance of 4s 6d on last week’s best for two-tooths. Another good price for twotooth ewes was 82s 6d received ‘for a pen sold on account of the Sunnyside Hospital Farm, whose line of 138 Romneys ranged from 77s to 82s 6d. A pen of 87 Romneys on account of W. Deans (Darfield) realised 70s.

Best price for older sheep was 655. and this figure was reached by some four-year-old Romney ewes sold on account of S. J. W. Gregory Hunt (Chatham Islands), whose line of 386 ewes ranged in price from 65s down to 365. A total of 265 Romney cross ewes were sold on account of L. J. Murray and Son (Marlborough) at the same figure. Some more Chatham Islands ewes sold at up to 59s and these were on account of D. Lanauze, whose line of 252 realised prices ranging from 47s to 595. The lamb sale was topped by Misses M. S. and A. Welsh (Tai Tapu), who sold 91 Southdown cross at 555. This was almost 10s a head better than last week’s best of 45s 6d.
