HINEMOA HOCKEY CLUB

DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS The Hinemoa Hockey Club will celebrate 60 years of hockey in Kaiapoi on April 14 and 15. The Rev. Mr Mathias, a minister at St. Bartholomew’s Church, started hockey for men and women m Kaiapoi, and also in New Zealand, as Kaiapoi was the first place in New Zealand that the game was played. Founded on July 8, 1896, the Hinemoa Club played friendly matches amongst the girls and against the men’s team until October 7, 1897, when the first women’s hockey match in New Zealand was played against a Christchurch team in the Kaiapoi park. Hinemoa won six goals to nil, and the club also won every match played until June 23, 1900. when a team from Christchurch beat the club by two goals to one. The diamond jubilee celebrations will include hockey matches in the Kaiapoi park on Saturday. April 14, between past and present players; a high tea in the R.S.A. hall at 6 p.m., followed by a social and dance. A church parade will be held at the Anglican Church on Sunday. April 15, at 7 p.m. Invitations have not been sent out, as the club has not a complete record of past members. Members have been advised to notify the committee members by March 31 if they intend attending the high tea

Fernie, Fendalton, have much pleasure in announcing the engagement of their elder daughter, Roma, to Hugh, youngest son* of Mr and Mrs G. R. Macdonald West Eyreton.
