AUCKLAND WORKS PROGRAMME

Move For Orderly Planning FOUR MINISTERS TO SIT ON COMMITTEE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 21. The names of the four Ministers who will act on the joint committee of Government and Auckland local body representatives to consider the orderly planning of Auckland works were announced by the Prime Minister (Mi Holland) after a meeting of the Cabinet. The Government representatives aro the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman), who will be chairman, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr K. J. Holyoake). the Minister of Finance (Mr J. T. Watts), and the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie), who represents an Auckland electorate. If any of the four Ministers is not available, Mr D. J. Eyre, who is also an Auckland member, will act in his place. Although because of pressure of work Mr Holland is unable to accept membership of the committee, he is to make himself available to it on occasions when the committee considers this may be helpful. A recent meeting of Auckland local bodies agreed to representation on the committee, on the basis of a representative from the City Council, the ad hoc bodies, the county councils, and the northern, southern, and central local bodies, a total of six representatives.

The formation of the committee was suggested by Mr Holland after an investigation of planned and proposed works at Auckland which showed that proposals over the next five years were £46,000.000 in excess of likely resources of manpower, materials, and money.

An early meeting of the joint committee is being arranged, and among its first business will be consideration of the Auckland master transport plan, covering major reading development at Auckland. Mr Holland was in communication with the Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. H. Luxford) tonight to discuss arrangements for the first meeting of the committee.
