COMPENSATION COURT
DECISION RESERVED Decision was reserved in a claim by Alexander Boyd, a fitter, of Christchurch, against the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., in a claim for £97 19s 3d before Judge Dalglisn in the Compensation Court yesterday Mr B. A. Barrer appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr J. B. Weir for the defendant company. Mr Barrer said plaintiff, who was employed at the Islington freezing works, was engaged in lifting a pump on to a staging and strained himself, causing him to develop hernia. Plaintiff felt something in his right side give way, but after a rest carried on with his work. He felt unwell, but returned to work on the following day. When the hernia manifested itself, he duly .reported to the foreman, and later sought medical advice. He wore a truss, and was later sent to the Christchurch Hospital, where he was operated on. It was contended that plaintiff had received injuries because of his work, and claimed compensation for wages lost at the rate of £9 Is a week for 10 and five-sevenths weeks. Boyd said that before June 2 he had had no trouble with hernia, although he had been engaged in heavy manual work. Mr Weir claimed that the hernia alleged to have been received by Boyd was not of a disabling nature.
