NAPIER WOOL SALE

Improvement On Recent Rates

(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, March 21. Today's market at the Napier wool sale was quoted at fully per cent, above recent North Island sales for medium to coarse crossbreds, with the finer qualities in sellers' favour. A total of 24.515 bates was offered today, and the sale will continue on Friday. The official report issued after the day’s selling stated that the offering consisted mainly of wool shorn from breeding ewes, and was drawn from the Hawke’s Bay. Gisborne, and East Coast districts. A large proportion of Jambs’ wool was included in the offering. and also a quantity of latershorn hogget and wether wool. The fleece wool generally was well grown, with a good proportion of deepest stapled wool, but some tenderness was in evidence. The wools generally

were carrying heavy condition and dust, with the exception of the drier coast clips. Lambs’ wool was rather short in the staple, and many lots showed traces of burr and seed. Skirtings were heavy in condition but reasonably free from yellow stain. Bidding Animated The market opened briskly with a full bench of buyers, and competition wa- brisk and animated —markedly so. It was obvious from the outset that interest was well spread, and a firmer basis was quickly established. The Continent was the principal buyer, with a strong demand from America on the coarser qualities. Bradiord gave some support on medium crossbred topmaking wools. Japan and Australia provided excellent competition on strong crossbreds, and New Zealand mills were operating on suitable lines of lambs. Wellgrown. sound wools shdwed a small premium. Strong crossbreds below 48 s quality brought a premium above medium crossbreds, and paper felts sold at between 52d and 56d for the finer qualities. Good to super lambs sold steadily, but average lambs showing burr seed or discoloration were very erratic. Skirtings sold steadily at firm prices. The official range of prices is as follows*—
