SPEED RESTRICTION ON CAUSEWAY

LIFTING NOT TO BE PRESSED The removal of the 30 miles an hour speed restriction on the McCormack’s Bay causeway will not be pressed by the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury): but the association will, in due course, endeavour to have the section of the road classed as a “limited speed zone” under the proposed new traffic regulations. The possibility of the road at Tinwald being similarly classed will be kept under review. Mr F. W. Freeman said some motorists wanted to use the causeway as a speedway. The speed should be, kept below 30 miles. The council decided to approach the Railways Department on the possibility of installing some form of warning device at the railway level crossing at Waikari On the motion of Mr‘A. R. Barnsdale, the council decided to protest to the Minister of Transport against the cancellation of licences to issue warrants of fitness in the north-west area of Christchurch until such time as adequate alternatives were available. The Commissioner of Transport will be informed that the association suppoits the principle of a testing station being opened in the area: but the council decided not to express any opinion on whether it should be operated by the City Council or the Waimairi County Council.
