BOMBS THROWN AT ARMY CAR
Terrorist Attack In Cyprus (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) NICOSIA, March 21. Two British soldiers were seriously injured and a third slightly wounded when terrorists lobbed two bombs at an Army patrol car in Famagusta this morning. The attack occurred on Constantinos avenue, Famaffusta. 300 yards from the fashionable Savoy Hotel. The area was immediately cordoned off.

A curfew was clamped down at dawn today on a section of Nicosia’s Greek quarters immediately adjoining the zone placed under curfew last week after the murder of a British police sergeant. The new zone, which includes the Archbishop's premises and several other Greek churches, lies immedi- I ately to the east of the previous curfew area. It was cordoned off by men of the Ist Battalion Warwickshire Regiment early this morning. British paratroops moved in for a detailed search. Earlier messages said that British troops made two baton charges in Nicosia as angry Turks demonstrated against a clash between Turks and Greeks yesterday in Vassilia. a north Cyprus village. For the first time since the unrest began over Cypriot-Greek demands for union with Greece, tear gas was used against the demonstrators in Turkish parts of the capital. Two Turks were slightly injured. Soldiers Charged Soldiers who resented women being allowed in the sergeants' mess hatched a bomb-throwing plot, a court-martial was told today. Privates Derek Mcßurney. Andrew Harvie. Robert Hannah, and James Macauley Ferguson have denied causing two bomb explosions at a camn in which two officers were said to have been wounded. Mcßurney in evidence today said they drew lots to see who should throw the grenades. The idea was “to make a bang” and see the officers and sergeants run out of the mess, he said. He said the soldiers in the N.A.A.F.I canteen resented the sergeants being allowed to have women in their mess “The sergeants were getting all the privileges—the officers, the whisky.” he said. The trial is continuing.
