Communist Leader In Poland
(Rec. 11 p.m.) VIENNA. March 21. General Edward Ochab has been elected first secretary of the Polish United Workers’ (Communist) Party to succeed Mr Moleslaw Beirut, who died suddenly in Moscow on March 12. the Warsaw Radio reported today. General Ochab was formerly Director of Political Education in the Polish Army. From 1945 to 1946 he was Polish Minister of Home Affairs, and from 1948 to 1949 he was chairman o f the Polish Trade Union Centra] Organisation. When he was elected to the senior post yesterday he was an ordinary secretary of the centra] committee of the party.
