OBITUARY

MR EDWARD JENKINS Mr Edward Jenkins, who was for 20 years senior classics master at Christ’s College, died in Wellington recently. He was one of the most respected masters at tWo college and from the time he joined the staff in 1900 until his retirement in 1935 he was known for the whole-hearted enthusiasm he showed in all his interests, which included music, cricket, fives and walking. A first-rate classical scholar, Mr Jenkins graduated from Cambridge University as a master of arts. He became house master of South Town House. Christ’s College, one of the day boy houses, and later was house master of Condell’s House for 12 years.

Many old boys will remember his strict discipline and kindly nature, but most of all his love for the subjects he taught. In his earlier days when he played club cricket in Christchurch he was noted for his slips fielding and he passed on his keenness for this aspect of the game through all his years at the college. Mr Jenkins was also a member of the choir and his collection of records provided many pleasant musical evenings for boys and masters. After his retirement, he lived at Eastbourne, Wellington, where he continued his music and church activities, and also became a keen bowls player. Mr Jenkins is survived by hit widow.
