‘‘We would like to place on record our gratitude to Miss Mary Enright for the wonderful interest she has always taken in our activities and the publicity she has given us throughout the years. We hope that she will enjoy many happy years in her retirement,” says the eighteenth annual report of the Victoria League Young Contingent.
A talk and demonstration on the icing and decorating of a birthday cake were given to members of the Richmond Plunket Mothers’ club at a recent meeting. A competition was won by Mrs Hole. The sum of £57 was raised at a successful jumble sale held by the Fendalton Free Kindergarten on Friday. The money will be added to the building fund for the proposed Montana avenue kindergarten. The cultivation of vegetables was described by Mr L. C. Hurndell, of the Department ef Agriculture, at the March meeting of the Shirley-St. Albans Garden Club. Mrs J. K. Moloney presided, and Mrs A. R O’Malley was in charge of the sales tables. Competitions resulted: best bloom, Mrs L. A. Bennett 1, Mrs C. P. Agar 2, Mrs M. K. Gray 3; three tomatoes, A class, Mrs T. Dangerfield 1, Mrs W. Pauley 2, Mrs D. Lee 3; three dahlias, A class, Mrs Bennett 1. Mrs E. R. Reay 2, Miss M. Wilkie 3; B class, Mrs M. K. Gray 1, Mrs T. R. Strong 2, Mrs M. Thompson 3: three zinnias, A class, Mrs Bennett; B class, Mrs Thompson.
Mrs H. E. Keys presided at the March meeting of the Papanui-Meri-vale Plunket Mothers’ Club, and wel corned three new members. A game of “Beetle” was won by Mrs F. Walton, and a competition was won by Mrs J. Trotter. Hostesses were Mesdames Lee and Jones.
The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Richmond Townswomen’s Guild:—president, Mrs L. C. Collett; honorary secretary, Mrs J. Fry; honorary treasurer. Mrs R. Nicol; committee. Mesdames Burn. Bell, Coburn, Jones, Downie. Gilmour, O’Brien, Bradding, Muschamp, Hartigan, and Richards.
The St. Martins-Huntsbury League of Mothers held its first meeting of the year last week. Mrs M. Deidman presided. Mrs E. Collard, of the St. John Ambulance Association, was the guest speaker.
The Tai Tapu Garden Club’s monthly meeting took the form of a bus trip around Christchurch, including a visit to the prize-winning private gardens and street and factory gardens. Members lunched at “Periwhero,” Redcliffs, the home of Mr and Mrs J. Fiecken, where a meeting of the club was held. Mrs H. A. Kennedy presided.
