Somerset Fair Wins At Warwick Farm

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY. March 18 New Zealand's Somerset Fair quashed rumours about his fitness yesterday when he romped home by 10 lengths in the weight-for-age Chipping Norton Stake* at Warwick Farm. It was one of the easiest wins at the track tor some time. Somerset Fair is unlikely to run in the marxet opened, but rumours that he was not at his pea* sent tlte odds to 10-9 against. One wager was made of an even £3OOO.

Rillsdale opened up an eight-length lead early in the 10 furlong event, but Somerset Fair came galloping through in the straight to take complete command. Roman Holiday was second by a length from Prince Delville. Eomerset Fair is unlikely to run tn the Doncaster or the Sydney Cup. His part-owner, Mr A. L. Millen, said after yesterday s race that Somerset Fair would probably be reserved for weight-for-age races only. In Melbourne, the New Zealander, Cambridge, was beaten out of a place in the Farewell Handicap, the final event of the Flemington autumn carnival meeting. The winner was Malvern Belle, followed home by Cyklon King and Harmonist. Cambridge was always in the leading group in the 10 furlongs test, but could not match the finishing speed of the place-getters. Cambridge opened at 6/1, but drifted to 9/1 S.P. The six furlong Leonard Stakes marked the reappearance of My Hero, New Zealand winner of the 1953 Caulfield Cup, after a year’s break. My Hero, which started at 200/1, was never prominent and finished thirteenth of the 15 runners. Serene Peak won, from Maccelli and Silver Crest.
