SPEEDWAY RACING

SMALL ATTENDANCE ON FINAL NIGHT

The last night-of the speedway season at Aranui was notable for an entertaining programme of variety events and a lack of thrills. A very small attendance saw H. Green and F. Shuter, better known as two of Canterbury’s top racing car drivers, in action. Of particular interest was the VincentH.R.D. record-breaking motor-cycle of R. Burns, which made its appearance at the interval. Burns took the machine gingerly around the circuit by slipping the clutch on the high-powered motor. Spectators gave generously to the appeal for funds for Burns and R. Wright, of Invercargill, to make a trip to the Utah salt flats in the United States for further attempts on the world's solo and sidecar speeds records. A light-hearted push-cart event for children was a feature of the programme. The drivers sat tense in their seats as the persons supplying the motive power pushed the carts around the track.

With A. G. Holland and Ronnie Moore not riding, the motor-cycle events lacked interest. I. Mauger and C. Jones were lie most successful riders.

The appearance of F. Shuter and H. Green produced keen competition in the midget car races. D. Herrick, of Western Springs, was the most successful driver, handling his high-powered car perfectly on the corners.
