PROPOSED POWER LINK

VALUE TO SOUTH ISLAND (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 18.

“A few years ago, any suggestion that South Island power should be taken to the North Island would have created a storm,” said the Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Hanan) in Greymouth yesterday. “But today things have changed, and the linking of power between the islands would be of great advantage to the south,” he said. The diversion of power would be worth between £20.000.000 and £30.000.000 to the South Island, said Mr Hanan. It would create a boom never even contemplated. It could nrovide 10 or 12 Roxburghs, and the West Coast would share in the “spoils of prosperity.” In a few years’ time the North Island would have to have more power, and it would not come from coal or water, he said. It would come from oil, and the South Island would have to pay its share, through taxes, to meet the huge overseas bill.
