Good Entries At Hawarden Show In Spite Of Prolonged Drought

The effect of the long, dry season, which has baked the hills of Waipara county browner than they have been for years, was obvious in most of the sheep sections at the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show on Saturday. Most judges commented on the effect which the drought has had, and- one, Mr W. R. A. Parsons, remarked on the good spirit of exhibitors in holding their entries for the show.

Entries, at 2082, were just a little more than 300 below last year’s record of 2403, and the gate takings were again a record, at £129. There were 632 entries in the horse and pony classes, which are growing each year; 86 in the Corriedale and 78 in the Southdown, the two main sheep sections. The dog trials drew 43 entries.

The Corriedales, always a strong class at Hawarden, had come through a hard season very well. Mr Duncan Ensor, of Methven. judge of the ewes, said that with the exception of some sheep, with obvious faults which the exhibitors had apparently not noticed, the class was very even. The natural condition classes were particularly strong. The champion ewe, shown by Mr H. Sidey, although an old ewe, had a particularly good head, said Mr Ensor.

There was good quality and plenty of competition in the Corriedale ram classes, said the judge, Mr A. A. Mackintosh, of Whiterock, and the champion ram, exhibited by Mr H. Sidey; was a real Corriedale type and a good all-round sheep. However, the ram hoggets were showing the effects of the drought, and were not up to expectations. The Southdowns, particularly the ewes, could take their place at any show in the South Island, said Mr J. Petrie, of Swannanoa, the judge. Mr A. D. Wyllie’s champion ewe was one of the nicest ewes in natural condition he had seen for some time. The rams jvere of good quality, but not up to the standard of the ewes. The South Suffolks were in surprisingly good condition, considering the hard season, and the champion ewe was an outstanding animal. The Merinos were only a small class, and the half-breds, also few in ndmber, were up to the usual standard. What there was of the fat sheep was good, said the judge, Mr Parsons, and the exhibitors showed a good spirit in holding on to their fat sheep until so late in the season this year. There was quite a good entry in the wool classes, said Mr Duncan Stewart, of Christchurch, the judge, but in general fleeces were off colour and showed the effects of the dry season. The winners, however, showed outstanding quality. Mrs B. G. Rutherford’s Jo-Jo, a 13stone hunter, did an excellent round to gain the champion hunter ribbon, and was praised by the judge, Mr W. D. Orbell, of Timaru, as a very promising young horse. Considering the hard grbund the jumping as a whole was very good, said Mr Orbell. The standard in the senior unity cup competition was fair, and many riders had spoilt their chances by • not bothering about cleaning their gear and inattention in the ring, said the judge. Miss S. Bason. There had been smooth jumping in all three Olympic classes, and the standard was definitely much better than a year or two ago.

There was very even competition in most classes in his section, said the group B pony judge, Mr M. R. Black, of Darfield, but there was lack of competition all the way through the harness classes. Miss Sandra Franklin’s Ballyhoo, the champion saddle pony over 12.2 hands, was an exceptional animal, he said. There had been a considerable growth in the pony classes at Hawarden in recent years, and the standard is also improving steadily. Results:— HORSES Light Horses (Judge: Mr W. D.
