HOMES FOR OLD PEOPLE

MORE LAND GIVEN AT SHIRLEY

PLANS FOR BUILDING COMPLETED

Mr E. A. Adams has given another area of land to the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council to add to its site at Shirley for a home for elderly persons. This area was given by Mr Adams to improve the line of’ the southern boundary of the original section which he gave to the council. Reporting this to a meeting of the council. Dr. H. R. Donald, chairman of the executive committee, said that plans had been fully approved and the architect hoped that the building contract would be signed by the end of July. The proposed home at Shirley still has no name, and the council hopes that members of the public will suggest suitable names through its secretary or the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast).

Dr. Donald, proposing this, said that he would give a £5 prize for

Miss M. B. Howard. M.P.: Is that provided they give it back? Mr G. H. McDermid: One of the homes in this area is called Churchill Courts. I suggest we call ours Attlee Mansions.

Miss Howard: I think that is very good. It was then agreed that interested persons would probably suggest a name without a prize. Mr W. H. La re om be reported that the Langford Home project was a “sad picture.” The contractor had encountered many problems, but in the last three months had only a skeleton staff on the job, and no progress had been made. The contractor now promised that the conversion of the old building would be finished in two months, and the new building would be finished in four months, said Mr Larcombe.

“We are trying to get it finished before the winter, but we can only take the contractor's promise.’’ he said. “Interior painting and flooring has to be done in the old building. The grounds have been cleaned up. and some laundry equipment is installed.”
