PORTABLE CRUSHING PLANT PURCHASE FOR USE IN SOUTH ISLAND (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, March 16. The purchase of a portable stonecrushing plant by the Railways Department to augment the supply of ballast in the South Island was recently approved by the Cabinet. This was announced today by the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine). He said that now the only ballast plant operated by the department in the South Island was at South Beach, Greymouth, with an output sufficient to supply only 7 per cent, of estimated South Island requirements for the next 10 years. Difficulty was often experienced in obtaining supplies of ballast from contractors when and where needed, said the Minister.
The new plant was fully mobile, and was expected to provide up to 20 per cent. of. South Island requirements, he said. It would consist of two separate towed vehicles, one to carry a jaw crusher, screen and diesel-generator, and the other a secondary crusher, screens, and mixing bins.
