INTOXICATED DRIVERS
SPECIAL PATROL SQUADS FOR CANTERBURY
The “anti-drunk” patrol squads organised by the Transport Department will begin operating in Canterbury this week-end. This was announced by the department’s chief traffic officer in Christchurch (Mr E. Wilson) yesterday. The squads are being formed now in the autumn drive against intoxicated drivers.
Intoxicating liquor was a major factor in causing fatal accidents, said Mr Wilson. For this reason it was essential to elirninak the drunken driver, and therefore the department had decided not only to patrol in the vicinity of hotels, but also to watch dance halls, parties, and other places where alcohol and driving might be mixed. As in the past, police cooperation would be available. Mr Wilson concluded his announcement with advice to the motoring public. “If you are going out to drink, be wise and leave your car at home and take a taxi, or get a friend to call for you,” he said.
