STONE BLAST IN FRUIT TREES

N.Z. SCIENTISTS FIND CURE (Neto Zealand P»e»» Association) AUCKLAND, March 13. Two young New Zealand scientists working from the plant research station at Mount Albert. Auckland, have found an antidote for stone blast, a stone-fruit disease that has caused widespread and large-scale losses in nurseries and orchards. The scientists. Mr D. W. Dye. a bacteriologist. and his brother, Mr M. H. Dve, a micro-biologist. After four years' work they discovered and developed a treatment using streptomycin. The success of their method has led to the brothers’ trials being copied in Australia, England. Scotland, and Canada. United States scientists have applied for information. The stone-fruit disease has been widespread in New Zealand, but with the streptomycin treatment losses have been cut from an average of 16 per cent, of trees to not more»than 2 per cent. Field tests throughout New Zealand with the antidote have resulted in a simple formula being evolved, and this week directions are being sent out to all orchardists.
