SCHOOL NEEDS AT HORNBY
THIRD SITE RESERVED A third school may ultimately be built in the Hornby area. A site has been reserved in the Leslie block, north of Buchanan’s road, where the State Housing Department proposes to build about 550 units. School development in the Hornby district will depend on where the child population develops. The main Hornby School’s roll has grown from 280 to 601 in five years. Four new classrooms and an administration block are nearing completion there. Tenders for another school in Buchanan’s road, near the corner of Gilberthorpe’s road, will close on Monday. It will start with four classrooms and an administration block.
If the Housing Department begins development on the Buchanan’s road frontage of the Leslie block, children there would be less than a mile from the No. 2 school. The No. 2 school, now under tender, is only three-quar-ters of a mile from the original school. With the three sites in close proximity, it is believed that the Canterbury Education Eoard may prefer to extend the No. 2 school and even make further additions to . the old school before starting the third. Decision on these questions will depend on where the concentration of new housing arises during the industrial development of Hornby.
