BRITISH-TURKISH TALKS

NATO And Bagdad Pact Supported

(Rec. 10 p.m.) ANKARA. March 13. Britain and Turkey last night reaffirmed their support of NATO and the Bagdad Pact in a communique issued after talks between the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Selwyn Lloyd), the Turkish Prime Minister (Mr Adnan Menderes) and the Foreign Minister (Mr Fuad Koprulu). Britain and Turkey are partners with Pakistan. Iraq and Persia in the Bagdad Pact, which is aimed at preserving Middle East security. The communique said: “The two Governments think it opportune to reaffirm their support of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the Bagdad Pact They are determined to do all in their power to ensure the effectiveness of these treaties. They are convinced that this clear and unequivocal statement of their intentions will contribute to peace.”

Answering questions at a press conference. Mr Lloyd said the Bagdad Pact countries would not be involved if Britain, France and the United States acted under their 1950 declaration underwriting the Middle East peace.

Mr Lloyd will fly to Tel Aviv tomorrow for talks with Israel’s leaders about Arab-Israel tension.
