VICIOUS ATTACK ON GILL
POLICE SEARCH IN MELBOURNE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. March 12. A 22-year-old brunette was “desperately ill” in a Melbourne hospital last night, the victim of what the police called a vicious attack in which she was stripped, criminally assaulted, nearly strangled, and left for dead on a bank of the Yarra river in suburban Burnley. The woman, Miss Gloria Bentham, of St. Kilda, was too ill to be . jnterviexved by the police last night. The police are preparing to step up a widespread manhunt as soon as she can talk to them and give a description of her assailant. Miss Bentham suffered serious bruising on her throat, severe swelling and bruising on the face and body. She lost much blood and apparently lay unconscious for six hours in the chill of early yesterday, morning. - The police described the attack as - the. most vicious on a xvoman since 1 the still-unsolved murder in 1953 of - 15-year-old Shirley Collins in Mel- - bourne. They said there were similarities about the two crimes.
