LYTTELTON’S SEA LION
Sir. —l am amazed at the song and dance over the probable destruction of a sea lion, and also the accidental death of a dolphin. Thousands of friendly animals are slaughtered for food every week and no notice taken. There is hunger and death from malnutrition in different parts of the world, but none of our mawky sentimentalists turn over in their beds. Is not it time people reoriented their sense of values, and ceased from making fools of themselves, and got on with their own jobs.—Yours, etc., J.S.M. March 12. 1956. Sir, —Will the employees of J. Miller. Ltd., say the sea lion was not a very serious menace to children in dinghies? A one-armed yachtsman was thrown into the water when the sea lion attacked his dinghy and another well-known yachtsman had a narrow escape. People who take their children to and from yachts at the moorings were very much afraid of “Dennis the Menace,” and are much relieved to know he has been removed from the inner harbour. I commend whoever was responsible for ridding the harbour of this definite danger to children.—Yours, etc., YACHTSMAN. Lyttelton, March 12. 1956.
