FIRE IN ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS
SAWDUST IGNITES IN FURNACE ROOM A fire in the furnace room of a woodworking shop at the Addington Railway Workshops caused slight damage to some hoppers and three cyclones used for extracting and separating sawdust and wood chips, last evening. Mr E. Falgar. a member of the workshops staff, noticed the fire shortly after 7 p.m. and fought it single handed until he was joined by other members of the workshops firefighting unit. A call was received by the Christchurch Fire Brigade at 7.10 p.m. and units from the Central and Sydenham stations attended. Contained in metal cylinders and chutes the fire spread from the hoppers along a conveyer. At 2.42 p.m., two units from the Central station were called to 225 Salisbury street where a stack of timber had caught fire. No damage was done to the property which is occupied by Mr E. W. Rich, although some of the timber was slightly damaged. Slight damage was done to the ceiling and roof of a house at 21A Crichton terrace. Cashmere, when fire broke out yesterday afternoon. Units from the Sydenham and Central stations attended at 4.25 p.m. The property is occupied by Mr J. C. Matson.
