OBITUARY
REV. A. T. THOMPSON The death has occurred at Masterton of the Rev. A. T. Thompson, 0.8. E., the prime mover in the founding of St, Andrew’s College. He was 79 years of age. Mr Thompson was born in Invercargill. and attended the Southland Boys’ High School. He entered Otago University in 1896, and graduated master of arts. In 1902 he entered Yale University, and' took a B.D. degree with honours. In 1903 he became a licensed member of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church. His first charge was at Thames. He became minister of St. Andrew’s Church. Christchurch, in 1915, and
during his ministry there he was a prime mover in the founding of St. Andrew’s College, the school in its early days being held in Mr Thompson’s manse.
Mr Thompson was appointed Commonwealth secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1918, and remained in the service of the society for 19 years, first as secretary in New Zealand foi- seven years, and then in Australia for 12 years. Books by Mr Thompson included “Australia and the Bible,’’ “Tyndale and the British Bible,’’ “From Melrose to Masterton.” and a book of poeijis titled “Her Finest Hour.’’
