AMERICANS IN CHINA

“Free To Depart At Any Time” (Rec. 11 p.m.) HONG KONG. March IX Communist China announced last night that all 46 “ordinary American residents in China” were “free to depart at any time." A Foreign Ministry statement broadcast by the New China news agency said “Among 40 Americans who committed offences against the law in China. 27 have been released before completion of their sentences and sent out of China.” But the statement alleged that “thousands upon thousands” of Chinese in the United States were not allowed to return to China. So far the Americans had refused to furnish Communist China with a list of Chinese in the United States. The statement said there had been 59 “ordinary American residents” in China, but 13 had already gone home, leaving 46. It said the United States was violating the agreement reached at Geneva about the repatriation of civilians. United States officials were subjecting the Chinese to abuse and threats to prevent their return to China, the statement said.
