SEATO AID PROMISES

£3,000,000 By Australia (Rec. 9 p.m.) KARACHI, March 8. Both the United States Secretary of State, Mr Dulles, and the Australian Minister for External Affairs, Mr R. G. Casey, have promised more aid to less-developed SEATO countries, subject to legislative approval in their own countries, an authoritative source said last night. Mr Casey said that an Australian contribution of £3.000.000 would come in the form of “twilight” assistance—goods with both civil and military uses. Mr Pineau, the French delegate, suggested that economic experts might meet in Paris to consider further strengthening economic ties. The new secretariat in Bangkok will have an annual budget of £107,100 to which all members will contribute. Prince Wan of Thailand said tonight that Thailand was receiving aid from the United States, and was “now glad to have another source for the aid, and is grateful for the generous offer of Australia.”
