HELICOPTERS FOR MINESWEEPING

N.Z. NAVY WATCHING DEVELOPMENTS

• Helicopters may become a part of the Royal New Zealand Navy within the next few’ years. They would be used for minesweeping duties. If helicopters are bought, the Navy does not intend to create a fleet air arm of its own to fly them. The Royal New Zealand Air Force will be asked to operate the aircraft.

“Both the United States Navy and the Royal Navy are investigating the possibility of using helicopters for minesweeping and we are getting all the information we can so we may take advantage of any ideas they may have,” said the Chief of Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral J. E. H. Mcßeath) in Christchurch last evening. “It has not been discovered yet whether using helicopters for minesweeping is a feasible proposition.”
